As we discussed in our previous review Hunter Gather Game Dinners
has dinner kits available for the game or fish that you harvested
yourself or for the meat you buy from the grocery store, and it's simple
and easy to make. All you have to do is provide the meat and a few
ingredients, and Hunter Gatherer Game Dinners provides the rest!
This week I tried their Cedar Plank Game Hen with Porcini Quinoa, only I substituted the game hen for filleted pheasant breasts from our upland hunt this fall. The cost for this kit is only $12 on the Hunter Gatherer Game Dinners website: https://huntergatherergamedinners.com
-There are pre-measured packets of seasonings, each labeled with a number
-Step-by-step instructions that break down what "number" of seasonings to add and when
-6x12 Cedar Plank
-A shopping list describing what you'll need to purchase (see below)
What You'll Need
-12 oz. Game Hen, Pheasant, Chicken or Turkey Breast (I used 4 filleted pheasant breasts)
-14.5 oz of Low Sodium Chicken Broth
How to Prepare:
-Included in the dinner kit is step-by-step instructions on how to prepare both the side of Quinoa and the meat.
-Before you get started, you need to soak the cedar plank in water for at least 2 hours before using. To do this, place a water filled pot or bowl on top of the plank to keep it submerged under water.
Step 1 - Presoak Cedar Plank in Water
Step 2 - Prep Pheasant & Apply Olive Oil
Step 3 - Apply Dry Rub to Pheasant
Step 4 - Season Plank & Place Pheasant on Plank and Cook (Note: the recipe for the game hen calls for cooking for about 30 minutes before turning it upside down. For my pheasant fillets I only cooked on 400 degrees for about 15 minutes and that was perfect)
Step 5 - If you are using a game hen or bone-in pheasant breast, Rotate
Step 6 - Prepare Quinoa Pilaf & Fluff
Step 7 - Check Meat Temperature (It needs to have an internal temperature of 160 degrees)
-Each dish takes 30-40 minutes
-A unique side dish is included in all dinner kits
-The dinners are health conscious: high in fiber, low fat & low sodium.
My Overall Impression
As with the Seared Venison dinner kit, I LOVED this kit as well! The quinoa had an excellent flavor that complemented the pheasant. The kit came with a sweet Paprika dry rub for the pheasant that had an excellent flavor with just the right amount of spice to it.
This didn't take long to prepare at all, especially with using the filleted pheasant breasts instead of the bone-in pheasant breast or game hen. There were minimal steps to this recipe, making it very easy to make. This is great if you're wanting a good gourmet meal without a lot of prep time.
